Xylometazoline
XYLOMETAZOLINE
Overview:
Xylometazoline is used as a nasal spray or drops to relieve congestion in the nose following such health complications as common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, or allergies. It works by making the dilated blood vessels in the nostrils narrow hence opening up the nasal passageway hence helping one to breathe easily. It is a fast acting drug and it is supposed to be taken on a short term basis, usually not more than 3-5 days because long lasting use can cause an increase in congestion because of the so-called rebound effect.
Classification:Sympathomimetic agent (alpha-adrenergic agonist)
Uses:
Xylometazoline is used to relieve common cold, sinusitis, allergies or other nasal infections that cause nasal congestion. It works by narrowing down the dilated blood vessels of the nose passage, hence making breathing easy. This drug provides fast short-lived relief, which usually occurs within a couple of minutes, and is generally prescribed to be taken in short term periods, say less than 3 to 5 days.
How it works:
The mechanism of action of xylometazoline is to stimulate alpha adrenergic receptors found in the blood vessels of the nose. Such stimulation causes these vessels to constrict hence reducing the congestion of nasal tissue. It, therefore, results in clearer airways in the nose that can be breathed in and out easily. Its action develops within minutes and this effect provides a short-term relief of a nasal congestion caused by colds, allergies or a sinus infection.
Dosage:As prescribed by your doctor.
Side effects:
Dryness of the nasal passages
Sneezing
Burning or stinging sensation in the nose
Temporary nasal irritation
Precautions:
The intended use of xylometazoline is short-term without the recommended long-term use, which lasts 3 to 5 days due to the risk of rebound congestion, which is the worsening of nasal obstruction after ceasing the medication. It must be administered with care on people who are hypertensive, heart related problems, thyroid related issues, or diabetic. It should not be given to children under the age recommended by the label, and in particular should not be exceeded in dose. To avoid the spread of infection, do not share your nasal spray with other people, and in case the symptoms continue or get worse, go to the doctor.
