Desoximetasone Topical Cream/Ointment
Brand Name: Desoximetasone Strength: 0.05% w/w | 0.25% w/w Therapeutic Classification: Prescription Additional Requirement (Schedule H)Introduction
Desoximetasone is a powerful topically applied corticosteroid used for treating various inflammatory skin conditions. Whether dealing with psoriasis flare-ups or stubborn eczema, the medication works by suppressing the immune response in the skin, helping reduce inflammation, redness, swelling, and severe itching that can interfere with daily activities. How It Works
Desoximetasone penetrates the skin cells and suppresses the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. By reducing these chemical triggers of inflammation, the medication helps the skin barrier recover, preventing excessive scratching, irritation, and secondary infections.Majorly Indicated For
Psoriasis: Helps reduce scaling, thick plaques, and patch formation on the skin. Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): Soothes red, itchy, and inflamed skin. Contact Dermatitis: Relieves allergic reactions and irritation caused by external substances. Seborrheic Dermatitis: May help control inflammatory skin conditions affecting the scalp and oily skin areas.Quick Action to Follow
Bathing: Gently clean the affected skin area and allow it to dry completely. Application: Spread a thin layer of cream or ointment over the affected area. One unit of cream is usually sufficient for an area of 40–60 cm (approximately two adult palms). Massage: Gently massage the medication into the skin until it is fully absorbed. Frequency: Apply twice daily, or as directed by your dermatologist. Important: Wash your hands after application, unless the hands are the treatment area. Some Common Side Effects
Desoximetasone is generally well tolerated when used as directed, but some people may experience:- Mild stinging or burning at the application site
- Dryness or skin thinning (atrophy) with prolonged use
- Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles)
- Skin discoloration during treatment
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is Desoximetasone a steroid? Yes. Desoximetasone is a potent corticosteroid classified under Group-II high-potency topical steroids. It is much stronger than over-the-counter hydrocortisone, so it should be used under medical supervision. 2. Can I use this cream on my face? The skin on the face is delicate and sensitive. Desoximetasone should only be applied to the face if specifically advised by a doctor, and typically for short durations only to avoid perioral dermatitis or acne-like eruptions. 3. How long does it take to see results? Most patients notice significant improvement in itching and redness within 2–4 days. If the condition does not improve within 2 weeks, consult your dermatologist. 4. Can I cover the treated area with a bandage? No. Do not cover the treated area with bandages or tight dressings unless directed by a doctor. Covering the area may increase steroid absorption, which can lead to systemic side effects. 5. Is it safe for children? Children are more sensitive to the side effects of topical steroids, so Desoximetasone should be used with caution and for the shortest possible duration in pediatric patients.Additional Information
Pregnancy / Breastfeeding: Always consult a doctor before use. The medication should only be used when the benefits outweigh potential risks. Avoid Eyes: Ensure the medicine does not come into contact with the eyes, as this may increase the risk of glaucoma or cataracts. Storage: Store at room temperature (around 25°C). Do not freeze and keep the container tightly closed.Certified Content
