ANASTROZOLE

Overview:

Anastrozole is a drug applied to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It acts by decreasing the level of estrogen hence inhibiting or slowing the process of growth of some types of tumors that require the presence of estrogen to facilitate their growth.

Classification: Aromatase inhibitor

Uses:
The principal use of anastrozole is in the management of breast cancer in post menopausal women and particularly those which increase in size at the incidence of estrogen. It reduces estrogen levels in the body and this slows down or prevents the growth of tumor growth. It is commonly prescribed in the post-surgical/radiation/chemotherapy period to facilitate prevention of the cancerous recurrence.

How it works:
Anastrozole is a drug that inhibits an enzyme referred to as aromatase that metabolizes estrogen in the body. In certain breast cancer, estrogen plays a role in the growth of the cancer cells. Anastrozole prevents these cancerous cells sensitive to estrogen by reducing its level in the body, therefore reducing or preventing the growth of the cancer cells.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects:
Hot flashes
Joint or muscle pain

Precautions:

Prior to the administration of Anastrozole, inform your doctor in the event that you have osteoporosis, or heart problems, or have problems with your liver, since the drug can influence such conditions. It can make your bones weaker and therefore your doctor might want your bones to be checked. In order to ensure safety during pregnancy, you should inform your doctor whether you are pregnant, feel like getting pregnant, or breastfeeding because Anastrozole should not be taken when pregnant.
