Overview:
Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker that is focused primarily on the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). It is achieved by dilation or expansion of blood vessels to ease blood flow and to decrease the load on the heart. Nifedipine may be administered to treat angina attack short-term and long-term high-blood-pressure management. The drug is provided in immediate and slow release forms based on the requirements of the patient.

Uses:
Nifedipine helps your blood flow more easily by relaxing and widening your blood vessels. This makes it easier to lower high blood pressure and reduces strain on your heart. It also helps prevent or ease chest pain (angina) and can improve poor circulation in fingers and toes. In some situations, under a doctor’s guidance, it can even help delay early labor.
How it works:
Nifedipine works by relaxing the muscles in your blood vessel walls, which helps the vessels open up and blood flow more easily. This lowers high blood pressure and reduces the strain on your heart, making it easier for your heart to pump blood and get oxygen to the body. By widening the arteries, it also helps relieve chest pain (angina) and improves circulation to other parts of the body.

Side Effects:
- Flushing – warmth or redness of the face
- Rapid heartbeat (palpitations)
- Swelling in ankles or feet (edema)
- Headache or dizziness
- Feeling tired or lightheaded
Precautions:Nifedipine makes your blood flow easier, but sometimes when you have heart problems or your blood pressure is low, it causes your heart to work harder and leaves you feeling dizzy. You should always report other drugs or supplements that you are taking to your doctor and you should also avoid grapefruit juice, which can interfere with the drug. Use only when your doctor advises that it is safe during pregnancy or during breastfeeding. Be careful when lifting up and in case of swelling, chest and feeling faint, get medical help immediately.
