Fexofenadine

FEXOFENADINE

Overview

Fexofenadine is an allergy medicine that helps relieve symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives. It’s known for working without making you too sleepy, unlike some older allergy medications.
Classification:
Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine—which means it’s designed to treat allergies with fewer drowsy side effects compared to first-generation types like diphenhydramine.
Uses:
It’s commonly used for:
Seasonal allergies (hay fever)

Year-round allergic rhinitis

Skin allergies like chronic hives and itching

How it works:
When you’re exposed to allergens like pollen or dust, your body releases a chemical called histamine. This is what causes allergy symptoms. Fexofenadine blocks the effect of histamine, helping to reduce itching, swelling, and other allergy signs
Dosage:
As prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects:
Headache

Drowsiness (rare, but possible in some people)

Dizziness

Nausea or upset stomach

Rare but serious side effects (very uncommon):
Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing) – seek help immediately if this happens.

Precautions:
Kidney problems: Dose may need adjustment.

Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Talk to your doctor before using.

Avoid taking with fruit juices (like apple, orange, or grapefruit) as they can reduce how well the medicine works.

Don’t take more than prescribed—even if symptoms are still there.

Montelukast

MONTELUKAST

Overview

Montelukast helps to reduce inflammation and may be used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children at least 2 years old.

Montelukast is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (a narrowing of the air passages in the lungs due to exercise that is also known as exercise-induced asthma) in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.

For adults and children at least 2 years old with symptoms of seasonal or year-round (perennial) allergies, montelukast may be considered when other treatments have not worked.

Classification

Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs)

Uses

Montelukast is commonly used for the long-term treatment of asthma and to prevent symptoms of exercise-induced asthma. It will not stop a sudden asthma attack. Always have your rescue inhaler with you for asthma attacks.

Montelukast is also used to help control the symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, stuffy, runny, and itchy nose.

How it works

Montelukast is in the leukotriene receptor antagonist family of medications. It works by blocking the action of leukotriene D4 in the lungs resulting in decreased inflammation and relaxation of smooth muscle.
