Dabigatran Etexilate

DABIGATRAN ETEXILATE

Overview:

Dabigatran Etexilate is an oral medication used to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). It is also used to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Dabigatran works as a direct thrombin inhibitor, meaning it stops thrombin, a key protein in the blood clotting process, from forming clots.

Classification: Direct thrombin (Factor IIa) inhibitor

Uses:

  • Prevents stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat).
  • Treats and prevents deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which are blood clots in the veins.
  • Treats and prevents pulmonary embolism (PE), which are clots in the lungs.
  • Sometimes used after hip or knee replacement surgery to reduce the risk of clot formation.

How it works:

Dabigatran Etexilate works by blocking thrombin, a key protein your blood needs to form clots. By stopping thrombin, it prevents harmful clots from forming in your veins, heart, or lungs, which lowers the risk of stroke, deep vein clots, and pulmonary embolism. Unlike some older blood thinners, it works in a predictable way and usually doesn’t require regular blood monitoring.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

  • Stomach upset (nausea, heartburn, or indigestion)
  • Headache
  • Minor bleeding, such as nosebleeds or small bruises
  • Dizziness

Precautions:

Dabigatran should be taken carefully if you have bleeding problems, have recently had surgery, or have kidney issues. Always tell your doctor about any other medicines or supplements you take, especially blood thinners. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only use it if recommended by a doctor. While on Dabigatran, keep an eye out for easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or blood in your urine or stool, and contact your doctor right away if you notice any of these.
