APIXABAN

Overview:

Apixaban is a blood thinning medication (other names include anticoagulants). It prevents and treats blood clots thus helping prevent occurrence of serious conditions such as stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It acts by inhibiting a certain clotting element in the blood (Factor Xa) and this makes clots difficult to develop.

Classification:Direct factor Xa inhibitor

Uses:
Apixaban is prescribed to prevent and reduce the blood clot which may result in severe complications such as stroke, deep veins thrombosis (DVT), or pulmonary embolism (PE). It is commonly used in individuals who experience atrial fibrillation (adjudge heartbeat) in order to reduce the chances of a stroke. Apixaban has been found frequently used in following surgeries such as hip or knee replacements in an attempt to curb the occurrence of any risky clots during the process of recovery.

How it works:
Apixaban is an anticoagulant by inhibiting one of the blood clotting proteins known as Factor Xa. This protein is a major part of chain reaction which facilitates clotting of blood. Apixaban inhibits the formation of clot in the body through its blocking mechanism thus slowing the process. This goes a long way toward preventing blood clots that can damage the legs, lungs or brain without ever completely inhibiting the blood clotting process when it should, as in taking place after an internal or external cut.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
Easy bruising
Minor bleeding (like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or heavier periods)
Nausea
Low energy or fatigue
Precautions:
Have a chat with your physician before taking Apixaban and inform him/her on any bleeding issues you may have, liver or kidney problems, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Apixaban is a blood thinner so it might be much more difficult to control bleeding even after cuts or minor injuries. Be particularly cautious of falling or getting injured and inform your dentist or surgeon that you are on it. There is also the need to avoid other pain medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen unless your doctor approves of it because other medications can aggravate the likelihood of bleeding.
