BETAHISTINE

Overview:

Betahistine is commonly used as a medication in the management of Meniere’s disease, and such other ailments as the resulting conditions which include vertigo, tinnitus and loss of hearing ability. The drug works to improve the blood flow of the inner ear which aids in reducing a build-up of pressure which causes these symptoms.

Classification: Antivertigo agent

Uses:

Betahistine is mostly used in the treatment of Meniere’s disease and other diseases causing vertigo (an illusion of movement), tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and hearing loss, related to the inner ear.

How it works:

Betahistine functions by interacting with histamine receptors located in the inner ear and brain. It activates H₁ receptors while inhibiting H₃ receptors, resulting in enhanced blood circulation within the inner ear and a reduction in pressure from excess fluid. This action alleviates symptoms such as vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss associated with conditions like Ménière’s disease. By boosting circulation and stabilizing inner ear function, betahistine aids in managing dizziness and gradually restores balance.

Dosage:As prescribed by your doctor.
Side effects:
Indigestion
Nausea
Bloating or stomach discomfort
Headache
Precautions:
Before you start taking betahistine, it is advisable to inform your doctor whether you have asthma, whether you have stomach ulcers, or whether you have low blood pressure levels since there is a possibility that this drug may make your condition worse. Those with the history of any allergic reactions to the drugs correlated with the histamine should be careful in using it. Pregnant women should not use betahistine unless directed by the physician; the same applies to lactating mothers. When you feel drowsy, avoid consuming alcohol and going out to receive stimuli. Stick with the recommended dosage and do not change it or quit taking the drug without discussing it with your physician.
