A proper application of ear drops ensures that the medication will reach the base of the ear canal, right where it is needed most.

Warm the Bottle: Keep it in your hands for some minutes. Cold drops can cause dizziness when instilled.

Straighten the Canal:

  • For Adults: If the patient is an adult, gently pull the top of the ear up and back.
  • For Children: For young children, gently pull on their earlobe down and back, to straighten the ear canal slightly.

Instill: Squeeze the prescribed number of drops onto the ear without touching the ear.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Dihydroxymethyl Carbamide is an antibiotic; it isn’t an antibiotic though.
It is actually a moisture-keeping soothing mild antiseptic molecule; that means its presence in the medication means it modifies the chemistry of the external ear to make an inhospitable environment for bacteria. At this point in the patient’s treatment is said to let the infected ear follow its own course to infection.

2. Ear infiltration application is not medically recommended for a middle-ear infection.
Dihydroxymethyl Carbamide ear drops are for use only in the external meatus. Symptoms of otitis externa typically develop over the course of a few days, so these affected individuals with profound middle ear pathology should be seen by an ENT doctor. It would not be of any use to attempt to treat an otitis media condition with topically applied drops, because they simply would not reach the infection site.

3. Why does my ear prescription contain Carbamide?
Carbamide-based preparations—like Dihydroxymethyl Carbamide or Carbamide Peroxide—are well-used products in ear care due to softening earwax or for moisturizing the ear canal skin, thereby preventing cracking and infection.

4. How long should I use this medicine?
The usual duration is between 3 to 5 days or until symptoms have disappeared. If there isn’t a change in 48 hours or if the pain worsens, discontinue use and see a doctor.

5. Can that be used on a child?
They are, generally, safe on children, but I recommend that your pediatrician first clears this for you, particularly if your baby is under 2 years old, to check and confirm that the eardrum is intact and the diagnosis is correct.
