FAMOTIDINE
Overview:
Famotidine is used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux), peptic ulcer disease and heartburn.

Famotidine is used to treat ulcers (sores on the lining of the stomach or small intestine); gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus [tube that connects the mouth and stomach]); and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How It Works:
Famotidine is in a family of medicines called H2 blockers. It works by blocking certain histamine receptors in the body, which helps reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes.

As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
Hives
Skin rash
Itching
Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
Hoarseness
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Headache
Dizziness
Precautions:
Before taking famotidine, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a history of Long QT syndrome, stomach cancer or other problems, or asthma, COPD, or other breathing problems.
Famotidine may be only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes changes in diet or lifestyle habits. Follow your doctor’s instructions very closely.
Heartburn is often confused with the first symptoms of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the jaw, arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, anxiety, light-headedness and a general ill feeling.
