OVERVIEW:

Levofloxacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat an enormous range of bacterial infections including those of the lungs, urinary tract, sinuses, skin, and the prostate. It is classified as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and therefore it acts against bacterial growth. In the form of tablets, liquid, or injectable forms, the administration of levofloxacin does not require any medical practice at all as it can be resistant or toxic.

Uses:
Levofloxacin is used in different bacterial infections such as pneumonia, sinus, urinary tract infection (UTIs) or bacterial infections of the skin or prostate. It is also applied in certain cases of bronchitis and stomach infections. Being a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it acts against a wide variety of bacteria and it is frequently prescribed when other antibiotics may be unsuccessful.
How it works:
Levofloxacin is an effective antibacterial agent that prevents the activities of the enzyme in bacteria called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV which play an essential role in enabling the bacteria to copy and repair their DNA. Levofloxacin blocks the mechanism of these enzymes and prevents the reproduction of bacteria and ultimately destroys them. The mechanism enables it to be effective in a wide range against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Precautions:
Disclose to your doctor whether you have a history of tendon issues, nerve diseases, heart disease, kidney disease or seizure before using levofloxacin. Do not spend a long time in direct sunlight, or use tanning beds, because this drug may increase sensitivity of your skin to sunburn. It is to be handled with caution in older ages and among youngsters only when it is unavoidable. Do not consume it together with antacids or supplements that include iron or calcium because they will lessen its impact. Take the medication as instructed by your doctor and stick by the entire medication course.
