MESALAZINE 

Overview:

Mesalazine is a medication that is mainly used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like ulcerative colitis, and sometimes Crohn disease. It performs its action by alleviating inflammation in the gut mucosal lining and aids in managing diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain. Mesalazine exists in various forms, including tablets, capsules, enemas, or suppositories, and thus it can be directed at inflammation in other locations of the bowel.

Classification: Aminosalicylate

Uses:

Mesalazine is also used to treat flare-ups and decrease signs and symptoms of diarrhea, bleeding, and stomach pain in individuals with ulcerative colitis and in rare cases, Crohn’s disease; and also to prevent relapses in controlling the disease and preventing future relapses.

How it works:

Mesalazine acts directly in the gut lining to soothe irritation and swelling. It does so by inhibiting some of the natural chemicals in the body such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes (which normally cause inflammation). Mesalazine improves healing of the bowel lining by reduction of these signals and slows the overactive immune cells to maintain symptoms such as pain, diarrhea, and bleeding under control.

Side Effects:

• Stomach upset – nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or cramps
• Gas, bloating, or diarrhea
• Headache or dizziness
• Tiredness or mild fever

Precautions:

By the time you start using Mesalazine, your doctor might have you have your kidneys and liver checked on a regular basis to ensure that they are healthy. Inform your physician regarding any other drug allergies or drugs that you are using, including aspirin. Use it with medical advice only if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Stay hydrated, and record any possible indicators of suspicion, including chest pain, rash, severe abdominal pains, etc.
