NICOUMALONE
Overview:
Nicoumalone is a vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (blood thinner). It is taken to prevent and treat blood clots, and to reduce the chance of stroke or embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation, artificial heart valves or deep vein thrombosis. The drug works by preventing the activity of vitamin K, decreasing the formation of clot-forming proteins in the body, which helps to keep the blood thinner.
Classification: Anticoagulant
Uses:
- Helps keep your blood from forming harmful clots that could block veins or arteries.
- Protects people with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) from getting a stroke.
- Prevents clots from forming around artificial or mechanical heart valves.
- Used to treat or prevent clots in the legs (DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- Lowers the chance of clots coming back in people who’ve already had one.
How it works:
Nicoumalone works by blocking vitamin K in the liver, which is needed to make clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X. When these clotting factors are reduced, the blood takes longer to clot, which lowers the chance of clots forming inside blood vessels. This action helps prevent dangerous problems like stroke, deep vein thrombosis, or pulmonary embolism.
Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
- Bleeding
- Tiredness or weakness
- Stomach upset
- Headache or dizziness
Precautions:
When you are taking Nicoumalone you will need frequent blood tests to ensure that your blood does not get too thin or too thick. Consider food intake, as the newer medications can interact with other medications, such as spinach, broccoli, or kale, which are green leafy vegetables. Also, attempt to avoid alcohol and cigarettes as this may undermine your therapy. And be sure to tell your doctor whether you are pregnant, having surgery or even a dental operation because this medication can increase your likelihood of bleeding.
