Overview:

Tolvaptan is a medicine used to help remove extra water from the body without losing too much sodium.It is used in some people with a genetic kidney condition called polycystic kidney disease, where it can slow down the growth of kidney cysts and help protect kidney function over time.

Uses:
Tolvaptan is largely prescribed to treat low sodium conditions in the blood, particularly in individuals with diseases such as heart failure or SIADH among others, where the body retains excess water. It assists the body to eliminate excess water without shedding the useful salt. It is also prescribed in individuals with a renal disease known as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) in which it slows the progression of cysts which are filled up with fluid and conserve the health of kidneys in the long run.

How it works:
Tolvaptan works by blocking a hormone in the kidneys called vasopressin. This helps your body get rid of extra water while holding on to sodium, which is helpful when your sodium levels are too low.In ADPKD patients, it helps control the growth of cysts in the kidneys, which can delay damage and protect how well the kidneys work.

Precautions:When you take Tolvaptan, your doctor will be very keen on the health of your liver, as the drug may influence it in some cases. You are likely to undergo frequent blood tests to ensure that things are fine. It also causes you to pass urine more than usual, therefore when you are out then it is very crucial to take in plenty of water during the day but not much so that it may overpower your body. In case you cannot feel that you are thirsty or cannot drink fluids liberally, this medicine is not suitable to your needs. In addition to this, ensure that you inform your doctor that you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking other drugs.
