Acalabrutinib

Among the secondary generation materials, the second-generation tyrosine kinase of Bruton, Acalabrutinib, is highly specific. It is designed to work against certain blood cancers by terminating the signal cells of cancer cells responsible for proliferation and growth. In contrast, unlike older treatments, Acalabrutinib is highly precise and usually does not cause “off-target” side effects, making it more preferable for long-term management.

Indications:

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Acalabrutinib is used as a management option for untreated and previously treated patients.

Small lymphocytic lymphoma: Calms the progression of this type of disease and helps to improve patients’ quality of life.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL): Usually taken by adults who had received at least one previous treatment.

How to use:

Acalabrutinib functions by binding to a protein called BTK, which is present on the surface of B-cells, whose this protein is hyperactive in some cancers, never giving their cells anything else but growth signals. Turning down this protein may help:

• Stop how the malignant B-cells spread.

• Induce apoptosis in cancer cells.

• Ensure that healthy immune cells receive no harm.

1. How should I take Acalabrutinib?

The standard dose is usually 100 mg taken two times per day (approximately 12 hours apart). You may take the tablets or capsules with or without food. Always swallow the medication whole with a glass of water; do not chew, crush, or dissolve it, as this may affect the way it is absorbed.

2. Are there any dietary restrictions?

Grapefruit and Seville oranges (including their juices) should be avoided. These fruits can interfere with how your body processes medication, thus increasing some side effects.

3. If I forget to take a dose, what should I do?

It must be taken as soon as it is realized if the patient happens to forget the dose by less than 3 hours (such as by 1 or 2 hours). Skip the dose if it has been more than 3 hours since the missed dose. Take the next dose at the normal time. Do not take a double dose in order to catch up.

a. Headache: The most common effect is headache, often seen right from the beginning of treatment and that subsequently lessen with time.

b. Weakness or fatigue: The patient may become increasingly tired and may feel weak from time to time.

c. Bruising: The patient may notice little red spots or may also bruise more easily.

d. Diarrhea: In case you experience diarrhea, make sure to drink lots of fluids.

Pregnancy: Not recommended. Use effective birth control during treatment and for 1 week after the last dose.

Infection Risk: Acalabrutinib can decrease your white blood cell count. If you have a fever or chills, inform your doctor immediately.
