Aripiprazole
ARIPIPRAZOLE
Overview:
Aripiprazole is a drug that stabilizes the brain. It is commonly applied in conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression where it helps in decreasing the manifestation of such events as hallucinations, mood swings, irritability or so. It acts by balancing the respective levels of some brain chemicals to enhance thinking, mood and the behavior.
Classification: Atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic
Uses:
Aripiprazole is used to help balance mood and thoughts in people with mental health conditions. It can reduce hallucinations or confused thinking in schizophrenia, control mood swings in bipolar disorder, and support other treatments for depression when needed. It’s also sometimes used in children with autism to help manage irritability or aggressive behaviors, making daily life a bit easier to handle.
How it works:
Aripiprazole acts by adjusting brain chemicals, mostly dopamine and serotonin, that are important in mood, thinking, and behavior. It is a partial agonist at the dopamine D2 and 5-HT1A receptors, i.e., it can enhance or inhibit their activity, as necessary, and as an antagonist to the serotonin 5-HT2A receptors to dampen hyperactive signals. This balance decreases hallucinations, stabilizes mood because of increasing mental clarity, and it has a reduced risk of drowsiness or motor side effects compared to traditional antipsychotics.
