Chlorpromazine: An Introduction, Its Use and its Side Effects

Being a strong medicine offering typical antipsychotic activity, chlorpromazine belongs to a group of medications, and specifically a phenothiazine. It works by balancing the dopamine output in the brain which helps in improving thinking, mood, and behavior. Apart from being one of the leading psychiatric drugs, chlorpromazine is well-noted for controlling severe bouts of hiccups and relieving nausea effectively.

Conditions Treated

Schizophrenia & Other Psychoses: Controls hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized behavior of this condition.

Mania: To regain stabilization in bipolar disorder.

Intractable Hiccups: Is one of only a handful of drugs that has a special indication for persistent hiccups.

Intractable Nausea: Helps ease Sign-induced Nausea and Vomiting.

Pre-operative Sedation: on occasion an anxiolytic for medical procedures.

Its Mechanism of Action

It works as an antagonist for various post-synaptic receptors. It helps to calm down an extreme stimulus due to overactive nerves leading to psychotic symptoms by blocking the main source of dopamine (D2) in the mesolimbic and mesocortical pathways in the brain.

Guide for Drug Usage and At what Dose it is Advisable

Use: With food or otherwise. Taking it with a glass of milk or with food will help prevent an upset stomach.
