Doxycycline
DOXYCYCLINE
Overview:
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline class. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which stops the growth and spread of bacteria.Doxycycline is often prescribed for many infections, including lung infections, skin infections, urinary infections, and some sexually transmitted diseases.. It’s also prescribed for malaria prevention and for treating acne in some cases.
Classification: Tetracycline antibiotic
Uses:
- Treats respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis
- Manages skin infections, including acne and cellulitis
- Treats urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Used to treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Used to treat infections transmitted by ticks, such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
How it works:
Doxycycline prevents the production of the proteins that bacteria require to grow and reproduce. The bacteria cannot reproduce without these proteins, and the infection can be fought more easily by the immune system of your body. It does not directly kill bacteria, rather, it puts them under control until they are released by your body. This renders it effective in a large line of infections such as lung and urinary infections, skin issues, and some tick or sexually transmitted diseases.
Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight
- Mild headache or dizziness
Precautions:
Your doctor will either prescribe doxycycline, which you take precisely as prescribed, with one full glass of water and you must remain upright at least 30 minutes after taking it to avoid irritation of the throat. Do not take it simultaneously with milk, antacids, or other iron supplements, which will render it less effective. It may increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight and therefore apply sun protection when outside. Finish the whole course even when you feel better to clear the infection to the fullest, do not allow bacteria to develop resistance. Inform your physician about liver or kidney issues, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
