Overview:
Cefixime is an antibiotic that is classified as third-generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat many bacterial infections. Role of antibiotic is to prohibit bacteria from growing. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, making it effective against infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and ear.
Uses:
– Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
– Ear infections Tonsillitis
– Pharyngitis
– Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
How It Works:
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial from making its cell wall which is its outer covering which eventually leads to death of bacteria. Both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria can be killed by this drug.
Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Important Information:
– Even if symptoms improve early but one should complete the full course of such medicine to prevent recurrence and development of antibiotic resistance.
– One must remember that antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like common cold, flu etc.
– Do inform your doctor about any allergies or any other kind of disease that you suffer from before using.
Side Effects:
– Nausea
– Diarrhea
– Abdominal pain
– Rash (in rare cases)
Precautions:
Disclose to your doctor whether you used to have an allergy to Cefixime or any other antibiotic.
In case of problems with the kidney or liver, your physician can require a change in dosage.
Inform your doctor in case of severe or persistent diarrhea.
Never stop the course short even when you begin to feel better.
