Nepafenac

Nepafenac Ophthalmic Suspension Nepafenac is a potent NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) designed as a prodrug for ophthalmic use. It is absorbed through the cornea and converted into its active metabolite, Amfenac. This targeted activation makes it highly effective in managing post-operative pain and inflammation, especially after cataract surgery, and in preventing macular edema in diabetic patients.

Key Benefits Targeted Relief: Reduces post-surgical redness, swelling, and pain. Fast Absorption: The prodrug mechanism enhances penetration into ocular tissues. Diabetic Care: Helps lower the risk of macular swelling after cataract surgery in diabetic patients. Comfortable Recovery: Minimizes gritty sensation and burning in the eyes.
Dosage and Administration Shake Well: Always shake the bottle to ensure the suspension is evenly mixed. Standard Dosing: For 0.1% formulation, instill one drop three times daily, starting one day before surgery and continuing for 14 days post-operation. Application Technique: Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, instill one drop into the conjunctival sac, close the eye, and gently press the tear duct for one minute. Avoid Contamination: Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelashes, or any surface.
Important Safety Checklist Top Hints: If using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applications. Contact Lenses: Avoid wearing contact lenses during use. The preservative (benzalkonium chloride) may cause irritation or discoloration. Storage: Use within 4 weeks of opening. Mark the date of opening on the bottle. Risk of Bleeding: Inform your doctor if you have bleeding disorders or are on medications like Warfarin.
Possible Side Effects Most effects are mild and temporary:
  • Burning or stinging sensation after instillation
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Foreign body sensation in the eye
  • Dryness or sticky eyelids
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe eye pain, light sensitivity, or sudden vision loss.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Can Nepafenac be used for simple eye redness or allergies? A: No. Nepafenac is a prescription medication specifically for post-surgical inflammation. It should not be used for routine redness or allergies without medical advice.
Q: Can it be used during pregnancy? A: It is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Always consult your doctor before use.
Q: Why start the drops one day before surgery? A: Starting early helps build drug levels in ocular tissues, allowing pre-emptive control of inflammation during surgery.
Q: Can I stop the drops if my eye feels better? A: No. Complete the full prescribed course (usually 14 days) to prevent recurrence of inflammation or macular swelling.
Q: What if two drops go in accidentally? A: It is usually not harmful. Rinse gently with lukewarm water if needed and continue with the next scheduled dose as prescribed.
