Quetiapine fumarate is a medication for the treatment of certain mental/mood disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. It also aids in adjusting several chemicals in the brain that manage mood, thinking, and actions.

Uses:
Quetiapine fumarate is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, manic and depressive bipolar disorder and occasionally as an add-on to major depressive disorders. It also aids in stabilization of mood, lowering the extent of hallucinations, positive thinking and even-mindedness.
How it works:
The action of quetiapine fumarate lies in the balance of important brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin, an aspect that enhances mood, alleviates hallucinations and stabilizes thoughts. It inhibits some receptors (primarily, dopamine (D2) and serotonin (5-HT2A)) and stills overactive signals in the brain. It also influences other receptors, which results in feeling sleepy and reduction of blood pressure. In general, it assists in the treatment of such symptoms like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

Do not use alcohol and other sedatives and drive carefully. One should monitor mood swings or suicidal behavior of young individuals and avoid using it in patients that are elderly and present with psychosis as one of the symptoms of dementia.
