Telmisartan & Chlorthalidone
TELMISARTAN & CHLORTHALIDONEÂ
Overview:
Telmisartan and chlorthalidone is a medication that reduces high blood pressure when it is necessary to call only one drug. Telmisartan acts by dilation and enlargement of the blood vessels, and chlorthalidone makes the body rid the body of additional salt and water via urine. They reduce blood pressure more efficiently by working together, thus, the heart can pump more easily and the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney issues is minimized.
Classification: Antihypertensive combination
Uses:
- Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) when one medicine alone is not enough
- Helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke by keeping blood pressure under control
- Protects the heart, brain, and kidneys from damage caused by long-term high blood pressure
- Sometimes used when there is fluid buildup in the body, as chlorthalidone reduces water retention.
How it works:
Telmisartan and chlorthalidone lower blood pressure by working in two ways. Telmisartan works by stopping angiotensin II from constricting vessels, which helps them widen and reduces pressure. At the same time, chlorthalidone, a thiazide-like diuretic, stops the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the distal tubule, causing the body to lose salt and water through urine. This reduces plasma volume and eases the heartâs workload. Together, they provide a stronger and more effective control of high blood pressure.
Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
- Dizziness or lightheadednessÂ
- Increased urination (due to chlorthalidone)
- Fatigue or weakness
- Headache
- Muscle cramps or electrolyte imbalance (like low potassium)
- Nausea or stomach upset
Precautions:
- Get up slowly from sitting or lying down to avoid sudden dizziness or fainting.
- Drink enough water, but donât overdo it, since the medicine can change body salt levels.
- Make sure to undergo regular tests for blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes as guided by your physician.
- Use with caution if you have kidney disease, liver problems, diabetes, or heart conditions.
- Alcohol should be taken in moderation because it can worsen lightheadedness and reduce blood pressure further.
