CILOSTAZOL

Overview:

Cilostazol is a drug that enhances circulation in the legs, helping ease pain and cramping during walking. It works by widening blood vessels and preventing blood clots, making it easier to move and stay active. This medicine is usually prescribed alongside lifestyle changes like exercise and smoking cessation to improve walking distance and quality of life.

Classification: Phosphodiesterase III (PDE3) inhibitor

Uses:

  • Improves blood flow in the legs for people with peripheral artery disease (PAD).
  • Reduces pain and cramping while walking (intermittent claudication).
  • Acts as an antiplatelet agent to help prevent blood clots.

How it works:

Cilostazol works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase III (PDE3). This leads to an increase in cyclic AMP (cAMP) inside platelets and blood vessel cells. In platelets, higher cAMP prevents them from clumping together, reducing the risk of blood clots. In blood vessels, it relaxes and widens them, improving blood flow to the legs and helping reduce pain and cramping during activity.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Flushing (warmth or redness of the skin)

Precautions:

Cilostazol should be used carefully, especially in people with heart problems, as it can sometimes make heart conditions worse. It may increase the risk of bleeding, so anyone taking blood thinners or other medications should consult a doctor first. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only take it if advised by a healthcare provider. While taking this medication, be alert for side effects such as lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, or unexpected bruising, and do not discontinue it abruptly without your doctor’s advice.
