DESIDUSTAT

Overview:

Desidustat is a drug that benefits individuals that have anemia particularly, people with kidney conditions. It does so by stimulating the production of red blood cells in the body that carry oxygen in the body. This assists in increasing energy and eliminating fatigue due to low number of blood cells. Many patients can use the Desidustat compared to some of the other treatments that require injections. It is categorised in a new collection of drugs that aid the natural mechanism of the body to cope with low levels of oxygen in the body.

Classification:

  • Hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI),
  • Anemia treatment agent.

Uses:

Desidustat is primarily aimed at the treatment of anemia in individuals with chronic kidney disease. A person feels tired and weak when their kidneys are not functioning well and are therefore unable to produce enough of a natural hormone required to make up red blood cells. In helping, Desidustat increases the capacity of the body to produce more red cells enabling more oxygen and energy.

How it works:

The mechanism of action of Desidustat is that it assists the body into acting like the individual is in the low-oxygen state. It inhibits some enzymes referred to as prolyl hydroxylase, which otherwise indicate the body to reduce the rate of red blood cells production. Desidustat raises the levels of a natural protein known as hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), by inhibiting these enzymes. This protein instructs the body to make more red blood cells and secrete a hormone which increases their production to facilitate more delivery of oxygen and lessen anemia.

Dosage:As prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Increased blood pressure (in some cases)

Precautions:

Prior to using Desidustat therapy, you should inform the doctor in case of heart, liver, or blood pressure issues. It should be checked regularly. Talk to your physician first in case you are pregnant or feeding your baby. Other medicines that cause interference to red blood cells should be avoided without consulting the doctor. Every strange symptom such as headache or swelling should be reported immediately.
