Overview

Dutasteride is a medicine used mainly in men to treat enlarged prostate (also called BPH – benign prostatic hyperplasia). It helps shrink the prostate over time, making it easier to pee and reducing the need to urinate often—especially at night.

Dutasteride is used to:
Treat BPH (enlarged prostate)

Improve symptoms like:

Trouble starting urination

Weak urine flow

Frequent or urgent need to pee, especially at night

Reduce the risk of needing prostate surgery in the future

Sometimes used (off-label) with other medicines for male-pattern hair loss

How It Works
Dutasteride works by:
Blocking an enzyme that changes testosterone into DHT (a hormone that causes prostate growth)

Lowering DHT levels helps the prostate shrink, making it easier to urinate and relieving pressure on the bladder

As prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects
Some people may experience:
Reduced sex drive

Trouble getting or keeping an erection

Less semen released during ejaculation

Breast tenderness or swelling

In rare cases, allergic reactions or mood changes

Precautions
Only for use in adult men — not for women or children

Pregnant women should not touch broken capsules, as it may harm a male fetus

May take a few months to show full results

Tell your doctor if you have liver problems

Regular check-ups and PSA blood tests may be needed while taking this medicine
