Overview

Methylergometrine is a medication used to prevent and control postpartum bleeding by causing the uterus to contract. It belongs to the ergot alkaloid class and is commonly used after childbirth to reduce uterine atony and prevent excessive bleeding.

Uses:Methylergometrine is primarily used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), which is excessive bleeding after childbirth. It is also used to help the uterus return to its normal size by stimulating strong, sustained uterine contractions. In some cases, it may be used during surgical procedures involving the uterus (like a cesarean section) or for managing incomplete miscarriage under medical supervision.
How it works:Methylergometrine is a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid that acts as a partial agonist on alpha-adrenergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic receptors. It stimulates smooth muscle contraction, especially in the uterus, leading to strong, sustained uterine contractions. This vasoconstrictive and uterotonic activity helps control bleeding after delivery.

Precautions:
