N-Acetylcysteine tablets of 600mg

N-Acetylcysteine, NAC, is one of the versatile pharmaceutical derivatives of the naturally occurring essential amino acid, L-cysteine. It finds a dual rationale in the environment of current medicine: having effect on the mucociliary system of lungs and serving as a direct precursor to Glutathione, the body’s major natural antioxidant. The use of NAC is recognized in conditions where thick mucus secretions are profusely made, as the primary recommendation in steps of liver detoxification.

Importance:

Respiratory Conditions: Synthetically breaks down disulfide bonds, consequentially loosening and liquifying heavy, compact mucus that can be coughed up during bronchitis, asthma, or COPD.

Liver Coverage: Intracellular glutathione levels inhuman cells are refilled so that subsequent oxidative and toxic insults on the liver are alleviated.

Antioxidant Help: Physically, it can meditate against oxidative stress throughout the body, and it can unite with glutathione to help the cellular repair capability of tissues across the body.

Kidney Health: Further, it can be used as a measure of kidney protection during some diagnostic radiological procedures that require contrast dyes.

Mechanism of Action of NAC

Key to NAC action is its mechanism of liberation and sulfhydryl group. In the lungs, NAC acts to break the disulfide bond of mucoproteins. The systemically formed end product serves as the rate-limiting precursor of glutathione, important in the functioning of the immune response and detoxification.

Dosage & Administration

Recommended Dose: For respiratory support, the daily dose is usually 600mg per capsule taken once or twice.

Dosage Form: Effervescent dosage form—Dissolve the drug in half a glass of water (100ml) and drink immediately. Tablets—Take one while intact. Container must be airtight!

Hydration: The recommended amount of liquids to drink per day should be increased to encourage the optimal effect of mucus thinning.

Take With Food: These can be taken either with food or alone; however, if taken with food, there is less chance of stomach discomfort.

Precautions and Contradictions

Asthma: Patients with a history of bronchial asthma should be considered cautiously because of the potential for bronchospasms from NAC use.

Gastric Ulcer: Administer under medical supervision in subjects with known histories of gastric ulcers, as NAC can affect the protective lining of the stomach.

Pregnancy & Lactation: No definite data is available regarding safety during pregnancy. Consult a health care provider if planning to take while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Strange Smell??: Odd, but don’t worry if you smell the odorous sulfide of rotten eggs/rotten food when unwrapping the pack. That smell is typical of the medication side effect!

Side Effects:

Most people tolerate NAC well with few incidents. However, the occurrence of any of these after taking NAC should advise immediate cessation:

Nausea or vomiting
Heartburn and indigestion
Skin rash or hives—mostly in some occasional instances
Excess mucus production with a runny nose or somnolence

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NAC indicated for a hack-type cough? Won’t NAC do any good for a dry cough?

NAC works as a mucolytic that renders a productive (wet) cough more non-thick and susceptible (good) to be coughed up easily, effectively expelling the mucus. This will either be ineffective and provoke major throat irritation when applied to a dry cough.

Is NAC different from Cysteine?

NAC is closely related to regular L-cysteine, but it is a more stable and more readily absorbed form of Cysteine.

Q: I’m currently medicating for a cough; can I take this along?

N-acetyl cysteine must not be taken with antitussives that are cough suppressants. When this med suppresses coughing, NAC breaks up the mucus to cough it out. An accumulation of fluid in the lungs would result from taking them together.

Q: For respiratory treatment, how long bugs do illness obliterate with the use of NAC?

Most patients report improvements such as the easing of breathing and clearing of mucus within one to two days of starting treatment.

Is NAC available as an OTC drug?

While a lot of places sell NAC for use as a dietary supplement, much of the effervescent forms or those for specific diseases would require a prescription. One needs to pay attention to the regulations of the particular state.
