PRAZOSIN 

Overview:

Prazosin is a medicine that relaxes blood vessels, helping to lower high blood pressure.It also eases urine flow in men with an enlarged prostate and reduces nightmares in PTSD.The first dose can cause dizziness or fainting, so it’s usually taken at bedtime.

Classification: Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker (Alpha-1 blocker)

Uses:

• Lowers high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels.
• Relieves urinary problems in men with enlarged prostate (BPH) by improving urine flow.
• Helps reduce nightmares and sleep disturbances in PTSD.
• Sometimes used in heart failure and Raynaud’s disease (off-label).

How it works:

Prazosin works by blocking alpha-1 adrenergic receptors found in the smooth muscles of blood vessels and the prostate. When these receptors are blocked, the blood vessels loosen and open up, which lowers blood pressure and eases the heart’s work. In the prostate and bladder neck, this relaxation makes it easier to pass urine. In PTSD, the same blocking effect helps reduce the stress-related adrenaline response that causes nightmares and disturbed sleep.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Headache
• Drowsiness or feeling tired
• Nausea
• Weakness
• Blurred vision

Precautions:

• Take the first dose at bedtime to avoid dizziness or fainting (first-dose effect).
• Rise gradually from a chair or bed to prevent dizziness from a quick drop in blood pressure.
• Avoid driving or operating heavy machines until you know how the medicine affects you.
• Inform your doctor if you have heart problems, very low blood pressure, kidney or liver disease.
• Do not stop the medicine suddenly without medical advice.

• Do not drink alcohol in excess, because it can add to dizziness and tiredness.
