Ripasudil 0.4% Eye Drops (5ml)

Manufacturer: Ajanta Pharma / Centaur Pharmaceuticals / Sunways
Therapeutic Class: Anti-glaucoma (ROCK Inhibitor)
Common Brands: Riparock, Ripatec, Rifas

Ripasudil is the first of its kind in the entire ophthalmic medications field, essentially targeted at the management of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This ophthalmic product contrasts with the classic therapy of reducing the production of aqueous humor (its production-targeted approach) and instead pursues the path of direct facilitation of outflow via the trabecular meshwork, which is the physiological outflow pathway for aqueous humor within the eye. This medication is generally prescribed when first-line treatments are unhelpful or if not tolerated.

A Major Benefit for Ripasudil

Being able to act directly to facilitate natural drainage of the eye to reduce pressure

Form One: VERY GOOD addition treatment when using simultaneously with prostaglandins or beta-blockers.

Optic protection in glaucoma with the maintenance of a stable pressure in the eye down to the optic nerve

Modern alternative for patients who do not respond favorably to conventional treatments for glaucoma.

The Drug Application Process

Wash Hands: Always wash your hands to prevent infection.

Tilt and Pocket: Lean your head back slightly and a pocket will form when gently you pull down the lower eyelid.

Instil: Put the drops in the eye and squeeze the dropper for a drop. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to the eye or surface.

Close and Press: Close your eye for at least 1–2 minutes. Gently apply the soft tissue side near the nose until it feels impossible. This is intended to help prevent the liquid medicine from entering the drainage duct between the corner of the eye and the nose.

Waiting Time: Wait for at least 5–10 minutes if you tend to use other eye drops first. Promptly advise your patient to wear glasses for about 15 minutes after instilling the drops.

Do not insert until the requisite time has lapsed.

Driving
Caution should be advised. Its use may cause transient visual acuity reduction, thus making it dangerous for driving until vision becomes clear.

Pregnancy
Consult your doctor. Whether or not it is safe to use during pregnancy is not completely established. Use it only if the benefit outweighs any possible risks.

Storage
Store at a temperature ranging from 15°C–25°C. Discard the bottle after 4 weeks from the date of opening.

Common Side Effects

Most adverse effects are related to the eye and primarily resolve shortly after application:

  • Conjunctival hyperemia (transient redness of the eyes): This is one of the common side effects.
  • Mild stinging or eye irritation
  • Erythematous swelling of eyelids or inflammation
  • Lessened visual acuity (fleeting)

Most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Why did I experience redness in my eyes after using Ripasudil?
A: Temporary redness or hyperemia is the most common side effect of ROCK inhibitors like Ripasudil. It occurs because the drug relaxes blood vessels in the eye. The effect peaks within a short time after instillation and then fades away within 1 to 2 hours.

Q: Can Ripasudil cure glaucoma?
A: No, glaucoma cannot be “cured.” However, it remains manageable. Ripasudil is important for controlling eye pressure—the most fundamental factor in avoiding sight loss and nerve damage.

Q: How many times should one put on drops during the day?
A: The standard dosage regimens for adults are usually prescribed as one drop twice daily, time and order being conditional on prescription. Always follow the ophthalmologist-specified regimen.

Q: What if you forget?
A: Catch up as you can on the missed dose on thought but skip it on missed dose time if it’s quite close. Never use doubles to compensate for a missed one.

Q: Can Ripasudil be used together with current medicinal therapy for blood pressure?
A: Yes, as long as you inform the doctor of this alongside various medications, including antihypertensives, it shall be given the green light.
