Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) 0.5% Ophthalmic Solution

Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose is a frequently high-viscosity polymer that is widely regarded as a “synthetic tear.” Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose belongs to a group of drugs known as lubricants or artificial tears. It mimics natural eye moisture and helps to relieve the dryness, irritation, and discomfort that occurs due to environmental triggers and extended screen use. Due to its distinctive mucoadhesive features, it can remain on the ocular surface for a long time, which ensures prolonged lubrication.

Main Therapeutic Uses

-Dry Eyes: Causes relief for chronic, minute dryness and “gritty” sensations.

–Environment: Guards the eyes against irritation caused by wind, sun, heating/air conditioning, and smoke.

-Digital Eye Strain: Relieves tiredness and redness associated with long hours spent working on computers or smartphones.

After Surgery Care: Often prescribed by ophthalmologists in order to keep eyes moist, as recommended per medical advice, while healing from eye surgery.

Contact Lens Comfort: This is used to moisten contact lenses and to assist with their comfortable and optimal-wearing period (do not use a product that is compatible with resistance).

Main advantages

Environmental Balance: Matches the natural biochemical constituents of human tears and serves as an electrolyte essential.

Extended Residence: The high viscosity of the excipient offers fewer washes on application, enabling less use.

Temperature Change: Provide a temperature drop right on inflamed or exhausted eyes upon application.

How to Use a Product Indirectly

Washing Hands: First clean hands after washing to eliminate risk from possible contamination.

Head Set: A person should rotate the back of his/her head up & should gaze at the ceiling, while the lower eyelid is being pulled down slightly to create a shallow purse to be ripped into.

Dispense: A person should again relieve the drop gently from a dropper above the eye, allowing massaging the lower eyelid together, thus giving the drop a free ride right onto the destination.

Close and Press: Squint eyes for 1–2 minutes and gently press the corner of the eyelid near the nose to forestall drainage of liquid towards the tear duct.

Frequency: Recommended use is every 4 hours per day or as needed.

Precautions and Safety

Contamination: Please do not have the tip of the dropper touch any surface, such as your eye; sterile solution may be compromised.

Blurred Vision: Avoid activities such as driving or operating heavy machinery while vision is still temporarily blurred.

Expiration: The usual expiration period for a multidose bottle is 30 days after it is broken open. Read the ‘Use-by’ period in the description of the product to confirm.

Allergy: Stop and visit an eye doctor if you have signs like eye pain, redness persisting for a long period, or a change in vision.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I wear my contact lenses while using Carboxymethyl Cellulose?

While some formulations may not be suitable for use in conjunction with contact lenses (the one only previously mentioned, for instance, is perhaps the harshest on soft lenses due to the Benzalkonium Chloride typically used as a preservative); it is recommended that the lenses be removed before using such eye drops, wait 15 minutes, and then reinsert them, unless the product is specifically labeled “Preservative-Free.”

Q: Is Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose a steroid?

No. It is nonmedicated, a lubricating polymer. It does not contain steroids, antibiotics, or anti-inflammatory drugs. It just acts as a mechanical lubricant for the moistening of the surface of the eye.

Q: How many times a day is it safe to use X’s eye drops?

Normally, for standard 0.5% concentrations, 3–4 times daily registration is the usually prescribed frequency. If you find the need arises to use it in excess of 6 doses per day, you should consult an ophthalmologist to rule out a severe case of dry eyes.

Q: Is this for children?

It is always a good idea to prefer a health professional’s advice to deal with children’s eye issues, especially first. CMC should only be used under adult supervision to avoid contamination of the child’s eyes by the dropper tip.

Q: Can I use other eye drops along with CMC?

A: Yes, but please wait 5–10 minutes after every administration so different eye medications are not mixed. And remember the least dense (watery) drops should be applied first, followed by the more considerably more dense (gels or CMC).
