Gamma Benzene Hexachloride

Gamma Benzene Hexachloride Lotion (USP/IP)

Gamma Benzene Hexachloride is primarily used for treating infestations of scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) and lice. It belongs to the organochlorine class of medications and works by overstimulating the parasite’s nervous system, leading to its destruction. Due to its toxicity profile, it is generally considered a second-line treatment when safer alternatives are ineffective or unsuitable.

Clinical Indications

Scabies Management: Eradicates mites and their eggs from the skin surface.

Pediculosis: Effective in treating head lice and pubic lice infestations.

Secondary Prevention: Helps prevent reinfestation within households when used appropriately.

Methods of Application

To ensure effectiveness and safety, follow instructions carefully:

For Scabies:

Preparation: Take a lukewarm bath and dry thoroughly. Allow the body to cool before application.

Application: Apply a thin layer from neck to soles, focusing on skin folds, between fingers, and under nails.

Duration: Leave on for 8–12 hours (preferably overnight).

Removal: Wash thoroughly with warm, soapy water.

For Head Lice:

Apply sufficient lotion to dry hair and scalp.

Leave for 4 minutes only.

Add water to form a lather and rinse thoroughly.

Use a fine-toothed nit comb to remove dead lice and eggs.

Special Safety and Precautions

Restricted to Topical Use Only: Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and open wounds.

Neurotoxicity Risk: Excess absorption may occur; use strictly as directed by a healthcare professional.

Post-Bath Application: Avoid immediate use after a hot bath to prevent increased absorption.

Contraindications

Not recommended for individuals with seizure disorders, hypersensitive skin, or damaged/broken skin.

Possible Effects

Common (mild):

Skin irritation or itching

Redness or burning sensation

Dryness of skin

Rare/Serious:

Dizziness or seizures (seek immediate medical attention)
