Ilaprazole 10mg Tablet

Ilaprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce excess stomach acid production. By targeting the proton pumps in the stomach lining, it helps relieve heartburn and promotes healing of the gastrointestinal tract.

Principal Using Forms

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Relieves chronic acid reflux and heartburn.

Peptic Ulcer Disease: Promotes healing of gastric (stomach) and duodenal (upper intestine) ulcers.

Erosive Esophagitis: Helps repair damage to the esophagus caused by acid reflux.

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Manages rare conditions with excessive acid production.

Mechanism of Action

Ilaprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) located in the parietal cells of the stomach.

This results in suppression of acid secretion at its final stage. Due to its unique chemical structure, it may provide a longer and more sustained acid suppression compared to some other PPIs.

Practical Guidelines

Timing: Take the tablet at least 30 minutes before meals with a glass of water.

Do Not Alter the Tablet: Swallow whole. Do not crush or chew, as this damages the enteric coating and reduces effectiveness.

Lifestyle Tips: Avoid trigger foods such as spicy meals, caffeine, and carbonated drinks to enhance treatment benefits.

Side Effects and Safety

Most people tolerate Ilaprazole well, but possible effects include:

Common: Headache, nausea, flatulence, or diarrhea.

Long-Term Risks: Prolonged use may increase risk of bone fractures and Vitamin B12 deficiency. Supplementation (e.g., calcium or magnesium) may be advised.

Contraindications: May interfere with absorption of certain antiretroviral (HIV) medications. Inform your doctor if you have liver disease or are on HIV therapy.

Questions and Their Answers (FAQs)

Q: Is Ilaprazole stronger than Pantoprazole or Omeprazole?
A: It has a longer half-life, which may provide more consistent acid control compared to Pantoprazole or Omeprazole in some patients.

Q: Can it be used during pregnancy?
A: Use only if prescribed by a doctor, after evaluating benefits vs risks.

Q: How quickly does it work?
A: Some relief may occur early, but full effect typically takes 2–3 days of regular use.

Q: Can I drink alcohol while taking Ilaprazole?
A: Avoid alcohol, as it increases stomach acid production and may worsen symptoms.

Q: What should I do if I miss a dose?
A: Take it as soon as remembered. If it’s near the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
