Overview:
Obeticholic acid is a drug that aids to improve the performance of the liver mainly to chronic liver disease patients. It is primarily used in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) which is a rare illness where the bile ducts on the liver swell and succumb to damage as time goes by.

Uses:
Obeticholic acid is mainly used to treat a long-term liver condition called primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). In this disease, the small bile ducts in the liver slowly get damaged, which can lead to scarring and liver failure over time. This medicine helps by improving the flow of bile and reducing inflammation in the liver.
How it works:
Obeticholic acid works by activating a special receptor in the liver called the FXR (farnesoid X receptor). This receptor helps control how bile is made and moved through the liver.When triggered, it lowers bile acid production and helps bile move more freely.It relieves pressure on the liver, soothes inflammation, and helps delay the worsening of liver disease such as PBC.
Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
Itching (pruritus) – the most common side effect, can be mild to severe
Fatigue – feeling unusually tired
Abdominal pain or discomfort
Joint pain
Constipation
Precautions:Do not use Obeticholic Acid or any other medication of this kind until you tell your physician about any liver issues you may have, and in particular, whether the disease that affects your liver is chronic and far advanced. Unfortunately in some cases this drug might aggravate the liver function, and again, your doctor may have to regulate the dosage or keep a sterner eye on you through frequent blood tests. If you begin to experience such symptoms as yellowing of the skin or eyes, swelling, or confusion; tell your doctor about it immediately. Moreover, inform your physician of any other medicine or supplements you are consuming to prevent any unpleasant interaction with them. And in case you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or will have plans to do it, talk about it as well.
