CEFTRIAXONE

Overview:

Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that kills bacteria by blocking their cell wall formation. It is used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, urinary tract infections, and skin or bone infections. It is usually given as an injection or IV and should be used under medical supervision.

Classification: Cephalosporin antibiotics

Uses:

  • Treats pneumonia and respiratory tract infections
  • Used for urinary tract infections
  • Treats blood infections (sepsis) and meningitis
  • Helps with skin, bone, and joint infections
  • Effective in sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea
  • Used for intra-abdominal infections and other serious bacterial infections

How it works:

Ceftriaxone is a β-lactam antibiotic that works by binding to bacterial enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This blocks the final step of bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing the wall to weaken and rupture. As a result, the bacteria die, making it a bactericidal antibiotic.

Dosage: As prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions – rash, itching, or hives
  • Gastrointestinal issues – nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset
  • Injection site reactions – pain, redness, or swelling
  • Changes in blood – temporary low white blood cells or platelets in some cases
  • Liver or kidney effects – rare, may affect liver enzymes or kidney function

Precautions:

Ceftriaxone is a strong antibiotic, but it needs to be used carefully. People who are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins should avoid it. If you have kidney or liver problems, your doctor may adjust the dose. It should be used cautiously in newborns, infants, pregnant, or breastfeeding women. Also, it shouldn’t be mixed with calcium IV solutions, and if you notice persistent diarrhea, you should tell your doctor right away.
